An overview of the testing on the new 1087 Expanding Van

  • Solutions FTG repurposes the 1087 Expando van into a fully operational Command and Control unit for military customers.
  • The C3S configuration equips the 1087 with workstations, networking, briefing spaces, and mission management hardware.
  • Solutions FTG offers on-site orientation, recurring training and maintenance to maximize the revamped vans’ utilization.

For decades, the 1087 “Expando” van has been a mainstay in the Department of Defense (DoD) inventory. Originally envisioned as a versatile Command and Control (C2) platform, this vehicle was designed to meet the growing need for mobile command centers. However, many challenges have led to units being underutilized or entirely unused for most of their service life.

As a company with multiple National Stock Numbers [NSN] patented ISO modules, Solutions FTG offers an impressive solution to unlock the true potential of the 1087. With our innovative, turn-key Command and Control interior configuration, we are repurposing these underused vehicles into highly functional mobile command centers, supporting military operations across the globe.

The History and Challenges of the 1087 Expanding Van

A look at the exterior of the new 1087 Expanding Van

When the 1087 Expanding Van was first introduced into the DoD inventory, its role was clear: to provide military units with a mobile, expandable space capable of supporting Command and Control operations. However, most units couldn’t afford to equip the vehicles due to constrained budgets, leaving them unused or minimally functional.

Many 1087 Expando vans were delivered as empty shells, requiring units to configure the interiors. Military units also lacked personnel with the necessary skills to install and maintain the complex systems required for effective Command and Control operations, further hindering the vehicles’ functionality.

The 1087’s underutilization can also be attributed to delays in receiving necessary equipment and operational parts. The limited availability of components and the slow procurement process have made it difficult for units to get their vans mission-ready on time. Only a small percentage of the vans were delivered in fully mission-capable configurations. This inconsistency has led to unequal access to mobile Command and Control resources, with some units having fully functional vehicles while others need more equipment to support operations.

The Turn-Key Solution from Solutions FTG

Instead of allowing these vans to remain idle, our team developed a turn-key Command and Control interior configuration specifically designed for the 1087. This solution has drastically improved these vehicles while providing the military with a cost-effective way to increase its mobile C2 capacity.

Our solution includes three National Stock Numbers (NSNs) that, when combined, fully repurpose the van into a mission-ready Command Center. This package is made available through the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA).

  • MI-C3S – Command Center Mission Interior

NSN: 8145-01-591-7437

This item must be paired with a 1087 Mission Exterior to create a complete solution.

  • IC-MPF – Multi-Purpose Operations Platform

NSN: 8145-01-534-0430

This platform provides powered rack storage beneath the central operations platform, optimizing space and functionality.

  • IC-SAT – Modular Storage

NSN: 8145-01-554-2276

A secured storage solution specifically designed for weapons, providing both safety and accessibility.

The C3S Command Center Interior Configuration

A different perspective of the central workspace station

The interior build-out includes elements specially designed to satisfy the requirements of military activities. These modifications include workstations, briefing rooms, meeting spaces, and the hardware and software required to support command operations and information management completely.

The Command Center can also be customized to meet the needs of each mission, with the option to enhance the technology and communications packages. This flexibility makes sure that the van can serve as an effective, nimble asset for personnel and mission management, all while delivering at a significantly lower cost than comparable offerings on the market.

Key Features of the C3S Command Center Interior Configuration

Here’s a more detailed look at the new additions and components of the C3S Command Center Interior Configuration. These features combine to create a highly effective and efficient mobile command center that meets the growing demand for operational flexibility and control.

  • Workstations: Equipped with five 22-inch monitors mounted on Ergotron mounts, each workstation is designed for both comfort and efficiency. Every station comes with a UPS to maintain continuous power for operations.
  • Networking Capabilities: The van is outfitted with two separate networks that can support both NIPR and SIPR operations. Each network features a Layer 3, 24-port POE+ Enterprise switch, ensuring great communication capabilities.
  • Briefing Area: The briefing area includes a 47-inch TV, video/audio matrix switch, HD webcam for VTC or web collaboration, and a whiteboard. This space is ideal for mission briefings and collaboration sessions.
  • Equipment Rack: A four-post, 25U open server rack, along with a rack-mounted UPS for switches and video matrix, ensures secure and organized storage for essential equipment.
  • Wireless Connectivity: The vehicle includes a wireless router and an exterior access point, allowing for uninterrupted internet access and communications in the field.
  • Environmental Controls: The 18,000 BTU ECU keeps the interior comfortable regardless of the external weather conditions.
  • Storage Solutions: Modular storage options, including secured weapons storage, allow for organized and secure storage of mission-critical equipment.
  • Customization Options: The standard C3S Command Center Interior Configuration can meet the most common command, control, and communication needs, but personalization options allow for adaptability to every kind of mission.

Deployment and Training

At Solutions FTG, we understand that a major component of mission success is making sure that personnel are properly trained on how to use the equipment and maximize the vehicle’s potential. That’s why we include comprehensive on-site training as part of our package.

After the delivery of the 1087 to our facility and the completion of the interior build-out, our team will conduct on-site orientation and training at a CONUS delivery location. This training includes up to eight hours of hands-on instruction, walking users through the various systems till they are comfortable with the vehicle’s operation.

In addition to the initial training, we also provide follow-up support in the form of recurring training and preventive maintenance sessions, typically scheduled six to eight months after delivery. Should your team require extended or OCONUS training, we’re more than happy to provide a separate quote tailored to your needs.

Availability

The production process for the 1087 C3S Command Center takes 120 days following the award or acceptance of a written purchase order (PO). This timeline means precise interior configuration, integration of key components, and thorough quality control, guaranteeing that the vehicle is mission-ready upon delivery to the unit.
